Cold is one of the significant problems that everybody faces in all seasons, and cough is one of the worst symptoms of the common cold. Apart from being a symptom of any considerable disease, coughing itself can be a major problem. Dealing with a cough is harder as it interrupts our life on a day to day basis. Coughing is a common reflex action that removes the mucus or foreign irritants from your throat. While everybody coughs from time to time to clear their throats, several conditions may cause more regular coughing.
Cough is also usually accompanied by cold and is very common among the children. And both can be managed by using Torex Herbal cough syrup. It is also one of the common cold syrup for a child too, and it is safe to use on them.
Causes
These are some of the common causes of acute or short-term cough:
- Infections of the upper respiratory tract (or URTIs): This is the leading cause of severe cough. URTIs are throat infections and are caused almost always by viruses. We generally have a fever, sore throat, and runny nose associations. This group includes the common cold, laryngitis, and influenza viruses. Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory infection that creates a cough that makes a “whoop” sound high-pitched.
- Hay fever (or allergic rhinitis): This specific allergic disorder may resemble common cold symptoms. Dry cough, sneezing, and runny nose are usually associated with this. An allergy cause is generally present in the atmosphere.
- Irritant inhalation: Acute exposure to certain gases and vapours can cause inflammation of the throat and airway, and can cause cough.
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract (or LRTIs): These are infections of the lower throat airways that usually cause cough and fever. They can damage the airways (bronchitis) or go into the lungs further.
- Lung clot: This is a life-threatening disease in which blood clots migrate to the lungs, typically from the leg veins, causing extreme shortness of breath and coughing at times.
- Post-nasal drip: This condition tends to be dry cough caused by chronic mucus leaking from the back of the nose to the mouth. It usually happens after a recent infection or prolonged exposure to an allergy cause.
- Chronic cough: Other causes of chronic cough include COPD: inflammation of the airway and lungs, which results in persistent phlegm cough and shortness of breath.
- Asthma: Asthma can cause intermittent dry cough. This may be a sign that asthma isn’t entirely controlled. Cough sometimes only happens in specific locations, such as the workplace or school.
- Persistent infections in the lungs: Many diseases in the lungs may cause a cough. (Tuberculosis can cause fevers, night sweats, and cough, sometimes with blood).
Types of cough
No matter what the causes of cough, it can be classified into five forms, depending on the triggers.
Dry cough
A dry cough is one that does not contain phlegm or mucus. Dry coughs can induce a tickling sensation and are often caused by irritation of the throat.
Whooping cough
Whooping cough initially presents mild, cold-like symptoms that grow into severe coughing episodes over a few weeks. This cough also contributes to thick phlegm, and the illness is highly contagious.
Post-viral cough
After a post-viral infection in the lungs, it is a reaction that falls back over time.
Wet cough
Excessive mucus sometimes causes chest cough. This kind of cough is sometimes called “successful cough” because the coughing act gets rid of mucus in the lungs.
Bronchitis
It is a bacterial infection-causing disease. This kind of cough produces yellow phlegm and is accompanied by a stuffy nose, headache, and exhaustion.
